The Finance function currently consists of six members of staff, headed up by the Head of Finance & Services, including a Finance Officer in Ireland. We provide a key support function to all the other departments within both MSF UK and MSF Ireland (UK/IE). This includes financial reporting and analysis to relevant stakeholders, assistance with budgeting and planning, organisational internal controls, and procurement/payment processing. We also have reporting responsibilities to the Management Team, the Board of Trustees, and to the wider MSF movement.

Overall, the Finance Department is responsible for facilitating the smooth running of all financial aspects of the organisation and ensuring compliance with all statutory regulations.

The Finance function is a small, but dynamic team with exciting goals on how we would meet both the current and future needs of (UK/IE) given their rapid growth in income and complexity. As a critical part of these goals, we have recently grown and restructured the roles and responsibilities of our team. We will also be undergoing an in-depth business process review as an organisation in early 2019, focusing on our finance processes, with the aim of coming to a shared understanding of our future ideal state. This review will obviously have a large impact on the Finance Department’s “business as usual”, not least involving an update or change in our current finance systems, planned for 2019 / 2020.

Our current financial management systems include our in-house Purchase Order system, our automated payments system (V1) and our accounting package (PS Financials)


The role of the Management Accountant is critical to MSF UK/IE’s rapid growth in income, complexity and future goals. Working closely with the Finance Officer and Finance Assistant, the postholder will lead on the production and analysis of the monthly management accounts, and month end processes and procedures.

This role will provide general support to the Finance Manager with the proposed changes in processes, reporting and finance systems. Responsibilities will include procurement/payment processing, budgeting, budget process changes and building and maintaining working relationships with the key stake holders.

Given the context we are operating in – we are looking for someone with the technical expertise and experience required, who is excited by the Finance Departments’ goals going forward. This would be an ideal role for a part or qualified accountant motivated by the prospect of creating lasting organisational impact on a global humanitarian and medical charity.


Financial/Statutory reporting and month end processes

Leading on all aspects of the production and analysis of the monthly management accounts to MSF UK/IE budget holders including income and expenditure reports
Ensure the necessary month end processes, including balance sheet reconciliations, are carried out to agreed deadlines. This includes overseeing the overall integrity of all income, expenditure and balance sheet accounting data, and supervising the work of the Finance Officer and Finance Assistant.
Continuously seeking areas of improvement and devising creative solutions to improve performance around processes, management accounts and month end.
Owning and taking responsibility around decisions in this area based on agreed priorities with the Finance Manager and Head of Finance & Services.
Ensuring that all inter-company financial relationships with other MSF sections are carried out efficiently and effectively.
Work closely with the Fundraising Department and MSF UK/IE ‘s external providers to ensure donations are processed efficiently and according to best practice.
Support the Finance Manager and budget holders in the budgeting processes around annual planning and forecasting.
Assist the Finance Manager in the production of the statutory accounts in accordance with UK GAAP and the Charity SORP 2015, and supplying all relevant information for the auditors for both the interim systems audit and year-end audit.

Other areas of Financial Management

Support the Finance Manager in overseeing system upgrades, implementing new systems and process improvements, working with project managers to ensure successful implementation, writing and maintaining policies and procedures, working with the wider business, providing training on the systems and dealing with queries.
Provide a business partnering function to relevant budget holders including reviewing, supporting and coaching on management accounts.
Support, advice and supervise the Finance Officers and Finance Assistant with the payments run and petty cash disbursements.
Develop and maintain working relationships with all internal and external the key stake holders.
Build strong internal relationships with colleagues in the Finance department and the wider UK/IE office.
Undertake any other tasks that are appropriate to the post and to reflect the needs of MSF UK and Ireland including inputting into departmental planning and organisational of larger projects
Potentially undertake short term secondments within MSF projects overseas

Knowledge, skills and expertise


Qualifications and experience​

Part qualified/ qualified ACA/ACCA/CIMA
Graduate level education or equivalent experience and training
Significant experience of a similar role in an equivalent organisation especially around financial reporting and analysis
Knowledge of financial procedures and processes and familiarity with the use of management information systems for financial management
Good working knowledge and previous experience in using at least one accounting package. Proficient working knowledge and experience of using Excel at medium to advanced level.

Experience of working for a Charity or Not-for-profit organisation and familiarity with charity accounting would be a major advantage
Experience with PS Financials
Experience around systems building and improvements
Experience of managing a financial systems upgrade – Knowledge of how to manage financial systems, and how to implement new financial systems and upgrade financial systems
