About our site: G4S Health Services has been one of the leading providers to all justice health environments since 2005. Working across Secure, Custody and Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC) across the UK, we provide primary care and forensic healthcare to a wide range of patients.

HMP Altcourse is a Category B local prison receiving sentenced and remand young offender and adult male prisoners from the courts in Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales. The prison can accommodate 1,324 prisoners in safe custody.

At HMP Altcourse we are committed to providing the highest standards of healthcare to prisoners in our care. Our healthcare team is staffed 24 hours a day and is made up of qualified Nurses and Health Care Assistants.

Job outline: The post holder will be required to work as an active member of the pharmacy team to ensure delivery of a legal, safe, high quality specialist prison pharmaceutical service which reflects National and Local Policy and Priorities, taking into account the high level of security that must be maintained at all times.

What’s involved:

Receive, unpack, input data, store and appropriately distribute pharmaceuticals and equipment in accordance with departmental procedures.
Advise appropriate staff when specific goods have been received and to transfer the goods to the appropriate location.
Assist in the collection and delivery of goods from and to the delivery point at the Prison Gate and to pharmacy and wings as necessary.
Resolve problems arising from deliveries and outstanding orders and notify
Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist.
Assist in the maintenance of stationery stocks.
Assist with routine production of orders.
Dispense individual In-Possession and Not In-Possession (including Controlled Drugs) medications in preparation
Maintain dispensary stocks by stock rotation and checking expiry dates and by keeping accurate computer records.
Maintain clean and tidy dispensing facilities and safe systems of work.
Answer the dispensary telephone calls and deal with enquiries in the appropriate manner according to departmental procedures.
Under supervision provide advice to prisoners on compliance and concordance.
Under supervision provide advice about prescribed medication.
Under supervision provide medication advice and advice on minor ailments reflecting the level of service of a community pharmacy..
Clerical duties including maintaining pharmacy forms and documents, ensuring relevant paperwork and documents are completed and filed appropriately.

The Ideal Candidate:

Essential skills:

NVQ Level 2 Pharmacy Services
General education qualifications. GCSE (A-C) Maths, English and Science
Experience of working within a team
Experience of working within a healthcare environment
Able to demonstrate a good standard of literacy and numeracy
Able to provide examples of diversity in practice
Able to work within challenging and complex situations
Passport for clearance

Desirable Skills:

Work experience, preferably in a pharmaceutical environment involving dispensing for a minimum of 1 year.
Further education qualifications
Experience of working within a secure environment
Evidence of working within a ‘value for money’ service
Driving License.

This role requires the ability to work with vulnerable people in a caring and compassionate way. A DBS check and relevant police/ prison clearance will be required to exclude any individuals with a history of behaviour which could be considered unacceptable (by G4S or the clients). Safety is of paramount importance and the post holder must ensure that safe systems of work are followed without compromise.
